In order for microbes to clean up efficiently, the right temperature, nutrients, and a good supply of oxygen must be present in the soil and/or groundwater. These conditions enable the microbes to grow and multiply and eat more chemicals.
The time it takes to effectively bioremediate a site depends on several factors:
- Ground water conditions
- Types and amounts of harmful chemicals present
- Size and depth of the contaminated area
- Type of soil and the conditions present
- Whether cleanup occurs above ground or underground
These factors vary greatly from site to site. It can take as little as a few weeks or up to two years for microbes to consume enough of the contaminants to clean up the site completely, also known as site closure.
