The main advantage of aerobic bioremediation concerns the breakdown of chlorinated ethenes, such as PCE. While anaerobic bioremediation often leads to the accumulation of vinyl chloride, which is more mobile and toxic than PCE, aerobic bioremediation does not produce vinyl chloride. Aerobic cometabolism using Cl-out breaks the carbon bond in ethenes, leading to the resulting harmless inorganic compounds.
