Q> How can I determine whether the naturally occurring bacteria at the site can be stimulated to degrade the chemicals of concern?
A> Bench scale treatability studies can be conducted by contract laboratories to determine whether the natural bacteria populations will degrade the target chemicals. The treatability study is usually a test to see whether the natural bacteria population will grow on the target chemical in an augur plate. This test confirms the bacteria can utilize the hydrocarbon as a food source. This kind of test will not give you enough information to determine whether the bacteria will be efficient in the subsurface. Background tests are not necessary when using Cl-Out and Petrox. The populations of Cl-out and Petrox are guaranteed to be much higher than the natural bacterial populations.
